Rob Bradford is joined by agent Scott Boras to discuss some of the surprises of this baseball season, while also analyzing where the game is headed. Boras dives into the controversial topic of qualifying offers, while giving perspective on the Red Sox' Stephen Drew signing. The agent also presents what states is a previously undisclosed plan to help limit pitching injuries.

And also a guy who is very very interest just to talk baseball -- and that's exactly what we did. Talked to Scott Boras about pitching about what he's seeing in the game so far this year. And also just over the Red Sox players he represents. Stephen Drew. Dinner Beaux arts -- also represents Jackie Bradley. Stop wars gives his take on a lot of things very very interesting. Here is Scott Boras full stylists like comic talking baseball viewing around and and I'm curious. You look at the season how it's unfolded. Is there anything that jumps. To you. How things have changed over the course of this season compared to last season any trends. And he waited teams are approaching things any different. Well I think when you look at the early part at this season the teams are doing well are the teams that are. Obtaining outs. Rather -- scoring runs. And those teams that had the ability through their pitching and their defense. To obtain doubts. Are really. At the head of their -- Milwaukee. Certainly Oakland. When you. The giants. The game is transition itself around. You know I think the giants were doing unbelievable well they lost -- center fielder while they lost doubts. And and I think that teams can solidify themselves but there. Rotation in their late bullpen. To get. Those. You know. I'm a believer in this probably against the grain of a lot but those. You know outs. You know. 26. 4745. Those outs are pretty doggone important party yet. And and I think that they have value that goes well beyond what a lot of baseball minds that have put in. All I remember we talked about this at the wedding was a winner meetings about -- If it's a stat that I always site we talk about closures I think you said there hasn't really been a world championship team. There hasn't put together 45. Saves something along those lines. Yeah I had to really get up to that level we talking about not only the amount but the percentage of blown saves we can keep it down. You know below. You know seven are made by them by the back -- people themselves literally career force then you know you've got an extraordinary season have a closer. And the great ones are the ones that do it consistently the ones that are and always under examination of the ones -- have a good year then they have the off here. A lot of that has to do it you would. You know that frequency of pitching right now you know you you've got to keep your -- -- around sixty appearances and that's hard to do in today's game particularly with. Do when you lose lose depth -- your rotation and you're pushing your bullpen. You always wanna go get those extra outs in the eighth inning -- ninth inning and guys go -- active military -- in Oakland never used at more than one inning and I think it. 888990. They were always in that position to win for a long term because they're closers were back closer was always in that spot to win. And and certainly I think there's a lot of metrics that you can look over a short period of time to say that that may not mean. Exactly accurate. What I think goes on a Major League Baseball now is that with the lack of power in the game. True lack of overproduction of having 35 a number of 35 home run hitters. The outs are all the more important because -- runs or less side so so I think that teams that have been successful have been following that. That. But remember we have a whole half of the season ago here sought club can improve itself defensively can gain depth -- dissertation. I think can easily gain seven -- -- games in. To get into one of those five spots in their respective -- Go little Red Sox centric -- along the what you're talking about about the priority of defense. And ice at a time when when Stephen Drew signed. You basically made yourself a better team on that entire left side of the field the the field even those in there and play their whole bunch. What you're talking with them -- -- -- viewing the Red Sox contract that team. Do you say that do you say hey listen this is a defense of game now in this guy's one of the best in the game. Well I think certainly that the the depth of the team. You know when you. When you can include an exit Sander Bogart's with at the age of 21 have a bat that -- apple line. When you have that type of player and he's deserving of that place if you've been included into -- -- then year you're that much better. You can also -- Stephen Drew into a lineup where you have the consistency. Of play. At the most. Volatile defensive position. And it's when you -- receive his metrics and you and you certainly determine that. You know where he is defensively highly ranked. That's one thing because that includes arranged in such and he certainly opened the topic here that there -- rating for consistency of the routine fly. Managing the balls that are supposed to be cotton are caught in the accuracy of throwing his delivery his feet. Is. Level of understanding of the league and wordplay hitters. We don't have quite all the metrics to include that. In view that. An analytical tool all line knows that ask your first baseman. Because the catalytic I don't know what the person that went Napoli with the same I bet you we can document what I'm saying about. Who this player is and what what makes him extraordinary and plus the fact. That Steve injuries you know though as since June of last year after it had been a discussion he got his at bats and got comfortable. I mean a guy hit 285. Hit for power. You know it is OPS was still fourth amongst yourselves when you're getting that defensively than offensively and you add that to a team. It's only a matter of time before more outs become more consistency comes and you increase the depth of the team you increase the options of the manager. And all of a sudden that makes everybody in the line of them much better. I have a good chance to talk to you and I know when Stephen -- when -- sign that you -- he talked at length about the qualifying offer. But this was a unique thing we talk about the uniqueness of this season. Uniqueness though of the first half our first few months for those players and in those players -- name. For anybody with unity and how did you approach that not not necessarily negotiations. But just making sure that they find the right spot there in good shape and and begin a. Across the board. Well. The game is you know it's it's the Bible play. And that you how we have an understanding from what the game tells you. Particularly after you've seen the unity of players worked together and the uniqueness about this is that this is the first time ever in baseball we had Major League. Players that are in that that. 10% best category. Of players. Because they were offered while playing office by definition. As there are many ball players and getting offered those kinds of contracts. And so the second part of it is that you get to evaluate your team after a period of time. Using all your scouting dynamics using all dugout. And I -- -- as well the legal valuation and you get to say. How to what level in these you know normally don't have the opportunity to add -- into the cake. Usually have to take the bakery exists but this is one where before you determine what the final product was. You've got to put a very important component to it. I don't think this is particularly good or fair for players are four teams. To have this kind of dynamic operate. But the reality of this system is that we've learned that. The dollar spent in the draft. Must be something that we've got to re approach because. Teams should have the ability. To use the success of their franchises. The success of our system. So we can create a structure where the economic model of the game. For example if a team the New York Yankees they all get a first round pick but the New York Yankees won a second round pick and they assigned work reagents. They're gonna have to give ten million dollars to the industry pool to all those disadvantage economic markets so they can get a second round pick. And then there are gonna say OK I will I will spend that because that draft pick means that much as opposed to they have an option to spend. As opposed to a mandatory limits. From them getting better are making decisions because we have a limits rather than options to advance you know get a chance to weigh something. You in this situation you have an artificial dynamic that is I think hurtful to the game and her all the players. When you win you with a qualifying offer thing dynamic came in a play with a new CB day. Everywhere is trying to gauge what it was going to be like obviously you're deeper into than anybody. Did anything about how that has unfolded taking you off guard surprised at all. Well a lot of people thought. This reaction to it was an anticipated I've been working with scouting directors and scouts. And and general managers. -- 35 years. You cannot hire 20/20 five people and you're scouting department viewing yourself as a general manager hired for scouting and development primarily. You don't have a general manager comes and it says I am here. To basically sign free agents know my primary function is scouting development and grow this organization. And so when you come anywhere -- all these people and then you hire another thirty or forty people develop department and all the cities I can't -- players. I can't say players does that senate creation. You're going to be a very very unpopular guy. So you know that the value of the currency of the draft if you only get eight million and to sign a proper creation which will help the big league team limits uniform. Which you've done is you've probably preventable that for -- -- from them signing 45 players you prevent the general manager were demonstrating his skill in getting all these draft picks. Signs and scouted. And you're taking on entire crew of people you hired -- sent a message to the owner they're really not that important that's why spent half the money that they can have otherwise utilized. Any general manager who does that is actually shooting himself in the foot. Because his value and his premise -- higher. Is now denigrated. All because he signs that. Pick and so to do that. I don't think it's gonna happen very often and I think it's artificial and I also think if you understand how the game works. You would never ever take that right away from any Major League team because it's not good for the fans that is not good for owners or players. Just wrapping things up another topic that I found obviously is from the forefront this year's starting pitching. Banned or not pitching across the board and there's been a lot of Tommy John injuries and we talked to John Farrell we've talked to the -- on the Red Sox one year of his about. Things that you could do. To have maybe limit the number of injuries now you're always thinking outside the box he always thinking of of the ways to improve the game. Is there anything that has jumped to you that say if we did this this might cut down on that. Yes. Essentially I did a study. From like 2004. On when your arrival date was in the big leagues as a pitcher. And I found out that there is about 500 pitchers who arrive in the big leagues at 25 world. And of that group only 3% of them -- -- Why and the answer is because those are pitchers who arrive up here because they usually don't throw 9495. They throw 9091 and they're here because of pitch ability experience knowledge they've worked themselves -- the minor. And they've -- they've made themselves valued in the big leagues because. Their pitch ability rather than their raw ability. On the converse when you look at 1920 and 21 -- that here. All those people all those pitchers who arrived in the big leagues are all big arm. 94 and -- type arms they all -- the way they're in the Tommy John ratio is near 70%. That is our ratio that is almost. 600%. Higher. So the reason that the pitchers who are coming at 25 their bodies are bigger. They're more. Adjusted and more experienced in the system to have your ability factors that younger players don't have. But the other factor is that there -- terror in their arms is a lot less because they don't throw. 94. And about. So what we must do I think to limit this is -- players who have big velocity and have valued the big leagues. There innings level must -- hydrated so below what it is currently. So at their bodies can adjust and that we understand that we can use those players in the big leagues but we can only views and at a very limited scale. The minute you say to a manager I had my third starter. My young third starter can only 320 or thirty innings as opposed to 170. What am I gonna do with the other if you're six innards I have an answer and the answer is the 2627. Man roster. 'cause it's gonna cost teams a lot less money. To have more pitchers in the big leagues to allow for acclimation process at a young age -- lower innings. Then it is for them to miss here that you are maybe lose that prospect forever. Might not letting him acclimate himself slowly in the major leagues. And I'm sure there's going to be a number of people suggesting that -- through medical science. Addressing a collective bargaining reappraisal. And the answer is. I'm really not I'm only letting you know what the numbers are and for teams to protect their most valued assets they're young great arms. I challenge you say that spending. For another minimum salary. Or two at a Major League roster is far less than. Losing that I'm not surprised that is the best chance to get so far so thank you know it's it makes a lot of sense.
