See you make a request. Matthews coming through for -- I didn't know this great Tommy zoomed -- yes. Net net do we like this ironically here we series about the auto he likes -- -- -- mildly ironic I know that America alive. I was kind of open they get to that. Just I mean I just wanted to I just wanted to hear the chorus. It's a simulator alliant MRI Diego. We do have an extra half hour in this week's though it's true. Our request that I idea that I just can't deal Michael Johnston was held out of practice this week to answer question got a concussion so he did miss some practice has over the course the week the reason he came up -- Calvin Johnson was listed as questionable by the added to the Detroit Lions. And most of the time if your questionable you're playing at the the categories for people don't know -- probable. Which means you're definitely. Questionable which means your. Probably playing. Doubtful which means you might play that -- and out which is out. Michael Johnson was listed as questionable this week but the -- -- surprise a lot of people that he went from questionable. Out on Sunday morning. The reason I I said earlier I was gonna tell you how the NFL. And and the United States government intersect. For brief moment here this morning in two ways the first. Our president Barack Obama. In an interview with the Associated Press today. Said that he would quote think about changing the Washington Redskins name if he owned the football team. As he decided he would become involved in the controversy by the way they discussed. The Redskins name on Meet the Press this morning as well. So there is all this talk about whether or not but there's nothing else going on television nothing else going on actually. The president said he said team names such as the redskins' offense a sizable group of people. He said while fans get attached to the names missed out to may not be good enough reason to keep them in place now. I actually truthfully mean this. I agree with him I I think they should consider changing the name but that's I'm I'm not gonna -- that I was kind of being half facetious here's the other way. That politics in the NFL collide here this morning. San Francisco 49ers safety Donte Whitner. Said he planned to change his name was gonna drop the W from the beginning of his name legally now in the same way Chad Ochocinco changed its name. Donte Whitner wants to change his name to Dante. Whitner. He wants to he wants to put battle line of hash tag legal hit her tee shirts. But there's a problem. Because of the government should shot to come they couldn't get to its paperwork. How happy I can't legally change his name on me because of the of the shut down because among of the things that they can't get to from the government perspective his name changes. So -- is gonna have to hold off on his teacher is and to us that's a beautiful Hamels it was it's -- Official legally you can do it right there won't they won't change it on the back to Lester got the peace and you have to have piece of paper you also have to and read something this week he has to buy a ball fueled shirts. These financially obligated to divide those up and take those off the market while weight -- that's anybody can change their name I don't see where the NFL would -- have a legal leg to stand on. To say hey naive maybe it's not too much Caribbean and I don't apologies gentle -- -- -- -- but it would like you know you wanna prevent -- he'd be essentially from. You know everywhere deciding don't wanna make and I think as hard as possible for people to do we have Brian Erica well on her parents are proud of the -- -- So there I gave you the 2 instances this morning where. The National Football League in the American government seem to have -- a high -- again it the whole thing about the Redskins name is a another topic for another day. If you happen to think that there's have reasonable argument to be made that they should change the name of the football team but that's just. -- Snyder museum option out of women who should be the president is maybe change that the -- as an American citizen he has every red clay and on who should be -- that the next browser senator -- I just -- I like the -- whether or not that decide whether as -- extraordinarily well you're also -- I don't -- argument is well yeah I mean you're also work. With one of at least as far as East Coast has concerned me into one of the most dysfunctional franchises in the NFL so -- that's all playing out against that backdrop and you're you're you're you're dealing with the donor who. Is Ab swing intractable when it comes to a potential name change so you're gonna have to you know it through -- so when you want the team to change its name you're gonna have to. Fun though we do it. So anyway those -- the and that the two political let items that will run for the entire day I do get a kick out of the Donte -- one. Because it's just as a fact there's a lot of things you know that are are affected by the government. Shut down one of which his name changes the pitching doesn't -- they don't get to runs -- that paperwork by anybody so he's gonna have a hold off on the hash tag legalized. It there tee shirts that he wants a market. Which I'm just -- lot of limb and suggest that he's probably gonna end up with a garage full of those anyway right. I'm not thinking that that's gonna become you know one of the big sellers in the National Football League with her Donte -- to go out there and and work through. We're going to be here until about 1230 or so and that means a little bit later on in this process where we're gonna go through what we think is gonna happen and what we think will be the outcome of today's game. And and we will do that little bit later on. I will also tell you though that there is a another change. In the patriots roster. I'll will be active today time according to my crease of ESPN boston.com and -- and number 53. But that's a name that probably anybody has set all day long. Late in the fourth pre season yes I believe we saw a glimpse of amendment is on the park squad would you immature and Doris Davis is out there as well he's been on and off the roster safety by a safety guide through the thing that jumps out to me -- -- -- -- during the pre season was all over the fuel all the -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Like that's probably -- -- response that that did that the other got a linebacker that's a little surprising especially that you were willing to give up the subtitle roster spot the essentially trade that -- -- it was also -- usual it was interesting that he has at least this week jumped over Steve both artists on the depth -- It's interesting because of the artist was a guy that I thought would be contributor and -- is a real good space I would just comment good special teams guys you know got shot yet so. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- So presumably we've got the other complete roster for today's game they do so much mixing and matching and weight mark he's Cole is a guy who says the the punching bag this year and the new Ross -- gag me you know signed this week cut that way back up down amber and I mean he's the guy this week. I don't know how many roster moves have already been made with marquee -- name on the island wanna say it's. Three. But they'd you know they have a guy who you know you couldn't put him down -- the practice squad but he does have some versatility you know you could cut him and bring about -- and bring -- back -- -- financially you fits into the system he's a Smart guy he's a veteran -- been around the play -- more so than the central thing he's. Played a lot in the league yet -- -- was up and down first year guy so that. Its interest significant. Expose them like that's what is that well I think Canada -- to go to New York groin or something there that's what helps me release a guy late enough in the week and they know he's injured. Teams don't claim America's values in the next week's Oregon and they're gonna bring MPC will Hewitt yeah I've I would Bangkok at that mark Mercury school's going to be back on the roster but -- is -- -- not he's not on the roster as of right. We will -- take quick break welcome back on the other side will continue to look at today's games but especially the patriots game in Cincinnati against the Bengals. A compelling case can be made that July 24, 2004, represents as significant a landmark as any date in modern Red Sox history. On that day, a memorable brawl between the Red Sox and Yankees served as a catalyst for an epic 10-9 walkoff victory for the Red Sox over New York and indomitable closer Mariano Rivera, a game cited by many members of the 2004 team as pivotal in Boston's first championship run in 86 years. Ian Browne, who covers the Red Sox for MLB.com and authored Idiots Revisited, discusses the landmark game.
